Makoto Shinkai is always recognized for his flawless
display of ‘human sentiments’ through various films. His filmography has always
managed to fascinate a large chunk of the population especially the Japanese anime
fandom.
Recently, I contrive to watch one of his amazing
animated films named ‘The Garden of Words’ which somehow succeeded in
illustrating the emotional variations and changes a person experiences with
time and situations.

The story: The story starts with a 15 yr old
high school kid who slacks of his morning classes during the rainy season and spends
his time in a garden at Shinjuku sketching various designs of shoes for
shoemaking. There he met a middle-aged woman who also skips her work during the rainy season. Despite acting like a stranger both of them get closely attached
to each other. Will this attachment turn into love or it will lead to
something else? Watch it for yourself to understand the concept behind this
short animated film of 46minutes.
Some fascinating aspects:

1) The animation was a visual treat for the viewers: one of the first positive facets
of the film was its animation which was visually brilliant and scintillating.
Whether it’s those swaying green trees of the garden or the shiny droplets of rain. Each and e
2) The movie ends with differing conjectures: one who will closely observe this film
will draw a conventional conclusion that the high school kid developed feelings
for that unknown lady who was quite older than him. Similarly, that lady liked
his company to an extent that she longed for his arrival in that garden in
Shinjuku but did she develop any feelings for him? Now, this might bewilder you
for a moment but this is art. Art films are like that. It’s that specific genre
where you have to draw your own Judgment after watching the film.

3) A simplified plot with a profound symbolic touch: The movie seems to have an untangled plot that tells about a series of conversations between two strangers belonging to different age groups. But is it that simple? No, absolutely not. Most of the dialogues in this film are overly symbolic in nature due to which you might find it difficult to interpret straightaway. The allegorical nature of dialogues is the quintessence facet of this powerful film.
I would like to conclude by saying that this film is not made for everyone coz people don’t have similar tastes in music and movies. But if you are a person who loves literature then please you may give it a watch. It will manage to keep you entertained for 46 minutes.
